Angst essen Seele auf (Fear Eats the Soul) examines collective forms of fear through the figure of the wolf in Western visual culture.

On September 1, 2022, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen received deeply distressing news: Dolly, her pony, who lived on her family’s farm near the town of Burgdorf in Lower Saxony, Germany, had been killed by a wolf. As the wolf hunt continued, von der Leyen used her political power to push two legislative proposals through the European Commission aimed at lowering the protection status of wolves…

Conceived as a kind of Bilderatlas, Angst essen Seele auf traces the constellation of events that has unfolded since 2022 around Dolly, von der Leyen, the wolf, and the local communities of the region.
